14 East 95th St.
New York City

MARKS & CO., Booksellers 【书商】
Booksellers
84, Charing Cross Road
London, W.C. 2

Gentlemen:

Your ad in the Saturday Review of Literature says that you specialize【vi/vt,专业,专门,专攻】 in out-of-print【绝版】 books. The phrase "antiquarian【古物收藏者】 booksellers" scares【a/n/v,使……受惊】 me somewhat【n/a/pron,稍微,几分】, as I equate【v,等同于,使……相等】 "antique"【n/a,古董,过时的】 with expensive. I am a poor writer with an antiquarian taste in books and all the things I want are impossible to get over【恢复,复原】 here except in very expensive rare【极少的,罕有的】 editions【版本】, or in Barnes & Noble's grimy【a,肮脏的,布满灰尘的】, marked-up【醒目标记】 schoolboy copies【泛指书】. I enclose【v,附入,封进】 a list of my most pressing【a,迫切的】 problems. If you have clean secondhand copies of any of the books on the list, for no more than $5.00 each, will you consider this a purchase order and send them to me?

Very truly yours,
Helene Hanff (Miss)

Saturday Review of Literature/
specialize/special:独特的,特别的,变为动词后依旧“特别“,即专门的,专攻的,专业化的;
equate/equal为等于,相等,equate为等同于

Miss Helene Hanff

Dear Madam,

In reply to your letter of October 5th, we have managed to clear up two thirds of your problem. The three Hazlitt essays you want are contained in the Nonesuch Press edition of his Selected Essays and the Stevenson is found in Virginibus Puerisque. We are sending nice copies of both these by Book Post and we trust they will arrive safely in due course and that you will be pleased with them. Our invoice is enclosed with the books. The Leigh Hunt essays are not going to be so easy but we will see if we can find an attractive volume with them all in. We haven't the Latin Bible you describe but we have a Latin New Testament, also a Greek New Testament, ordinary modern editions in cloth binding. Would you like these?

Yours faithfully,
FPD For MARKS & CO.

Nonesuch Press edition/
Latin Bible/
Latin New Testamen/
